Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt Are Launching Their Own Coffee Company

Green Day teamed up with a company that specializes in compostable plant-based plastics to create the new coffee pods.

Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, the founding members of punk rock band Green Day, are reportedly getting ready to launch their own coffee roasting company, Oakland Coffee Works.

Armstrong and Dirnt, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, and bassist, respectively, who are also working on their 12th studio album, say that their company is the first to use mass-produced coffee bags and pods that are compostable.

Oakland Coffee Works’ bags were developed in partnership with UrthPact, a company that manufactures plant-based compostable plastic, and Ultra Flex, a company that developed the bags. Other pods, like those produced by Keurig, have yet to be made completely compostable, a sticking point which has been criticized by environmentalists and even the K-Cup’s own creator, John Sylvan.

According to the Financial Times, the most important breakthrough in creating the bags was to design a degassing valve that releases pressure from airtight bags, while preventing air from getting back in. Oakland Coffee Works’ bags will go on sale later this week, while the company’s coffee pods will be available by late January.

“I’ve been drinking coffee all these years, I looked at the coffee bags and realized they’re all landfill,” Dirnt told the Financial Times. “It was astonishing to me. I hope that the big companies out there step up to the plate too.”

Green Day Release New Song ‘Xmas Time of the Year,’ Launch Coffee Company

It&aposs Christmas Eve and Green Day would like to spread some holiday cheer with a brand new festive jam, "Xmas Time of the Year." The song is an original rather than a simple cover of an age-old Christmas song we&aposve heard time and time again. No word yet if Green Day will be releasing a new album in 2016, but a new song is more than enough to cheer about!

The song is an overall reflection on traditional Christmas themes, opening with the lines "Seasons greeting cards and Christmas lights light up the city at the end of the year." The mid-tempo rhythm sounds like a concentrated effort not to hit the gas too hard and burst into full on punk rock mode. The even-paced song allows the lyrics to truly sink in, giving the full effect of what the holiday brings to mind.

Along with the new song, Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt announced the opening of their own coffee business, Oakland Coffee Works. In the hyper-competitive world of the planet&aposs most traded commodity, second only to crude oil, it is hard to gain an edge over the industry&aposs leaders. The duo found theirs, however, and will be utilizing compostable bags and pods to house their products. In an interview with Financial Time posted on Green Day&aposs website, Dirnt stated, “I’ve been drinking coffee all these years, I looked at the coffee bags and realized they’re all landfill. It was astonishing to me. I hope that the big companies out there step up to the plate too.”
